Introduction:
This
whitepaper will guide you through the step by step process of how to run a
Backup of your
LegalSuite
Software program. This will ensure that your company has a backup of crucial
data – should
anything happen.
NB: IT IS
IMPORTANT TO FIRST CHECK WITH THE PERSON THAT MANAGES YOUR
COMPANIES I.T
BEFORE CHANGING ANY OF THE EXISTING BACKUP STRATERGIES
THAT MAY BE IN
PLACE.
Step 1 – Getting to the “Backup Database” screen.
1.1 Go to the SERVER computer that hosts LegalSuite.
1.2 Open your LegalSuite Program.
1.3 Click on “File” on the top, Right of LegalSuite.
1.4 Select “Backup Database” as shown below.

The
below window will appear.

NOTE:
The Database file is typically called Legalsuite.mdf, as this is a Microsoft
file, it is generally
stored in the
Microsoft SQL Server Data folder. To find this database file, please follow
step 2 below:
Step 2 – The “From Database Filename” field.
2.1 Click on
button
to the right-hand side of “From Database Filename”.A window will appear like
the
one below.

2.2 Click on the “My Computer” Icon in the Left panel,
this will change the main window to show your
“My
Computer” Items as illustrated below.

NOTE: Microsoft
SQL Server would typically be installed to the Local Disk (C:), this install
directory
may
vary, depending on how the Microsoft SQL Server was installed. Assuming the
Microsoft SQL
Server
has been installed as default, Double-Click on “Local Disk (C:)”, the contents
of this Hard Drive
will
then be shown in the window as illustrated below:

2.3
Double-Click on “Program Files”.

2.4
Double-Click on “Microsoft SQL Server”

2.5
Then double-click on “MSSQL”, and open up the “Data” folder therein.

2.6 Select the “Legalsuite.mdf” and click on “Open”
You
will then see the original backup window in LegalSuite, with the “From Database
file name”
filled
in as shown below.

Step 3 – The “To Backup Filename”
This is the
path of where you would like to save the backup to. For convenience, I like to
save my backup’s
onto my “Local
Disk (C:)” as it is easy to find. You can however, save this backup to which
ever directory you like.
To select
where you would like to save the backup, please follow the steps below:
3.1 Click on
button
to the right-hand side of “To Backup Filename”. A window will appear like
the one below.

3.2 To Save the backup to your Local Disk (C:), Click
on the “My Computer” Icon in the Left panel, this will change
the
main window to show a your “My Computer” Items as illustrated below.

3.3 Double-Click on your “Local Disk (C:)”, this will
open in the main window as shown below.

NOTE:
The File name is very important as it will help you to identify the backup if
needed.
I
prefer to abbreviate LegalSuite as “lsw” and I then follow with the date and /
or the name of the database,
eg:
lsw150409legalsuite3.bkp. It is only necessary to add the name of the database
in the event that you
have
more than one version of LegalSuite installed on the server. You can name the
backup file how ever
you
would like but that will allow you to identify the backup.
3.4 Once you have named the file, simply click on
“Save”, it will then take you back to the “Backup Database”
Window
in LegalSuite as shown below.

3.5
Once you click on “Ok”, it will begin backing up your database.

NOTE:
This process may take several minutes, depending on the
size of your LegalSuite Database.
Once
the backup has completed, you will be presented with the message box below.
This message box
displays
the path and file name of your backup.

3.6 Click “OK” to close the message box and you can
then continue to step 4.
Step 4 – Backing up of the LegalSuite Program Files
Once
you have made the backup of your Database, it is very important to then backup
the LegalSuite
program
files (Lsuite folder).
To
do this, we need to go into “My Computer” (On your Windows desktop).

4.1 Typically the “Lsuite” folder is located on the
Server’s “Local Disk (C:)”, double-click on the
“Local
Disk (C:)” to open it.

4.2 The “Lsuite” folder, as well as the Database
backup file created in Steps 1 – 3 need to be copied onto
either:
a tape drive, a memory stick or a removable Hard Drive. It is advisable to
first check with the person
that
manages your Companies I.T before over writing any existing backup system that
they may have in place.
If you receive
an error message during backing process please contact LegalSuite technical
support on 0861 711150
